If you made the Walking Dead in a small coastal town in England, you would get Dead Beat. This was action packed, dark and full of twists and turns. I had such a fun time reading this.

Synopsis
Haven is a small sleepy town, where Johnny works as a police officer, burying a dark secret. But this is the day everything changes. The dead don’t stay dead anymore. As the walls close in and the living die out, the true evil comes out in the once quiet residents of Haven.
My Thoughts
Even though, this was a zombie novel, the real horrors is with some of the village residents. I liked that a lot, it was actually my favourite part of this. I had a few issues with it, which I will get to later, but overall really enjoyed this and had a great time whilst reading.
This was action packed for the outset. There is very little build up to the actual apocalypse. For only 242 pages quite a bit of time passes, so the everyday side of the zombie apocalypse is left instead for a highlight reel of the tensions between Johnny and the other residents. Not to say this is bad, it’s very fast paced and I liked that. It felt very thrilling and at certain points I could not put it down. It felt like a whole season of a TV show, I almost wish it was longer so we could have more time with the characters, there were a quite a few characters and I wish they had more time and more development.
A majority of the horror does come from the people themselves, not the zombies. For some, this will be a little disappointing, which I can understand. There are some very disturbing scenes but most were either emotionally disturbing or sexually disturbing. There was not a lot of gore, there is a lot of fighting but not so much gore. Sometimes these scenes kind of came out of nowhere and took me by surprise. They were shocking and very intense although sometimes felt a bit out of place.
Overall, I am looking forward to continuing the series, I adore zombies and this hit the spot for me. I just love a fast paced, almost popcorn read. I cannot get enough.
